A cat under a chair is not necessarily asking to be coaxed out. Hiding can help cats cope with unfamiliar surroundings. Give your cat a safe retreat and let them choose when to emerge.
Offer a retreat with an easy exit
A plain box on its side or an accessible covered bed can work. Choose a quiet spot where children and other animals will not corner your cat. Keep food, water, and a litter tray accessible, without placing them inside the retreat.
Make company optional
Sit a little distance away and keep your movements calm. Do not reach into the hiding place to force contact. Notice when your cat approaches on their own.
Notice a change from normal
New or increased hiding can also signal illness, pain, or stress. If the behavior changes suddenly, persists, or comes with other concerning signs, contact your vet.
